Detroit Diesel Announces New Series 50 Engine Rating for Fire
and Emergency Vehicles

DETROIT, Sept. 17 -- Detroit Diesel Corporation
(DDC) announced a new 350 horsepower rating for the Series 50(R)
engine, specifically rated for the fire and emergency services
industry.

The new 350 HP Series 50 engine at 2100 RPM offers two peak torque
ratings of 1000 ft-lb and 1150 ft-lb, both at 1200 RPM. With the
flexibility provided by Detroit Diesel Electronic Controls (DDEC(R)),
the Series 50 engine is compatible with the Allison Transmission
Division (of General Motors) World Transmission MD 3066 and HD
4060. The new rating provides a compact and competitively-priced power
plant with the DDEC system.

"This new rating provides the fire industry the flexibility of a short
wheel base truck with the horsepower needed to provide a safe and
fast- responding vehicle. Both the Detroit Diesel(R) Series 50 and
Series 60(R) engines have interchangeable parts, providing a fire
department the opportunity to commonize their maintenance parts
inventory," said Kevin Kroger, DDC's Vice President, Worldwide Sales -
Fire and Emergency Services. "The acceleration of the Series 50 engine
is excellent. The new rating incorporates the DDEC-unique Pressure
Sensor Governor system, which automatically adjusts engine speed to
maintain a constant desired hose pressure. This eliminates problems
due to sudden hose pressure fluctuation which could be caused by
opening or closing of water lines."

DDEC offers a variety of benefits and options for the fire and
emergency services industry, including:

* Full on-board engine diagnostics, reducing downtime

* Electronic fire pump Pressure Sensor Governor, improving water flow
and pressure management

* Reduced exhaust emissions and smoke, providing a cleaner station
environment

* Operator protection features through vehicle/electronic engine
interface, such as safety interlocks and throttle inhibit, providing
safe and smoother operation
