GM in China

09/18/96

The Economist Intelligence Unit reported that General Motors has received "unofficial" notification that it will be able to register its planned $1 billion Pudong joint venture with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC). Registration, is a preliminary step and the automaker will have to submit a project feasibility study and partners' contract to the central government for final approval. Under the joint venture, GM will transfer component technologies to SAIC, and the two will jointly manufacture and sell a variant of GM's Buick sedan. Critics have said the sedan will be too big for the Chinese market.
