Fiat Plans Temporary Layoffs

09/17/96

The Associated Press has reported that Italian car maker Fiat SpA will cut production by 9,400 autos in October, temporarily laying off thousands of workers. The company will send 15,000 workers home during the fourth weeks of October, and 8,500 workers in the month's final week of the month.

The unions blamed the layoffs on the continuing slowdown in car sales in Italy. Production will be suspended on lines that produce the 145, 146, 155, Delta, Dedra, K, Bravo, GVT and Spider models.
