Volvo May Use a Mitsubishi Engine
09/17/96
Reuters reported that Swedish vehicle maker AB Volvo said it was considering using Mitsubishi Motor Corporation's new fuel-efficient, direct injection engine for its S40/V40 models. Volvo spokesman Ulf Thorne said, "Volvo is currently discussing the possibility of purchasing GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines."
Mitsubishi Motor will introduce the GDI engine in its new 'Galant' model, which will be launched in Japan later this year. The company says which GDI technology could reduce a car's gasoline consumption by up to 20 percent.
Remarking on early stage talks with Mitsubishi, Thorne said, "We have well-functioning cooperation with Mitsubishi Motors today and the production plant of Nedcar in Holland and we are most optimistic when it comes to future discussions in this matter."
