Nissan Develops Automated Paint Inspection
09/17/96
Nikkei English News reported that Nissan Motor Company has set up an automated system to detect problems with automobiles' painted surfaces. The system uses 28 charge-coupled device cameras to find flaws with a diameter of 200-500 microns by examining digital images of light bounced off the vehicle surface. The company says that the system can examine a car in about a minute, will improve quality, and will allow it to cut the number of inspectors it hires by 50%.
The car maker will set up the system at all of its Japanese vehicle-assembly plants in three years. Installation at overseas plants will follow.
