Mitsubishi Develops Ultra-Light Vibration-Reducing Floor Material

09/09/96

Kyodo has reported that Mitsubishi Motors announced it developed an ultra-light automobile floor material which drastically reduces noise and vibration.

Mitsubishi says it's already using the material in its newly remodeled Gallant passenger car and Legnum station wagon, both of which hit the market on August 29. The carmaker claims that the flooring material is three times more effective against vibration than conventional materials.

Conventionally carmakers paste sheets made principally of asphalt to floors in order to deaden vibrations and reduce noise. Mitsubishi's new material is a liquid that later solidifies. The company says it should be easier to limit its use to parts of the car that require an anti-vibration coating. Additionally, the new material will cut 8-12 kilograms from a car's weight.
