Honda Announces New V6 Engine
09/06/96
Honda Enters New Frontier of U.S. Manufacturing with Production of First V6 at Anna Engine Plant ANNA, Ohio, Sept. 4 -- Honda associates at the Anna Engine Plant launched a new era in U.S. manufacturing today as they celebrated the start of mass production for an all-new 3.0 V6 engine, the first Honda V6 engine manufactured in the U.S. "This new V6 engine is the product of a global design and development team that highlights the capabilities of Honda in America," said Larry Jutte, vice president and plant manager of the Anna Engine Plant. "This high-tech V6 engine for the new Acura 3.OCL was designed to be manufactured exclusively in Ohio. Our engine plant associates and suppliers were partners in the development of this world-class engine." To prepare for the new V6 engine, the Anna Engine Plant is completing a $200 million, 190,000 sq. ft. expansion which began in January, 1995. The expansion, which includes new aluminum casting, machining and assembly areas, will increase production capability to 900,000 engines and related drivetrain components a year. "The new production lines are the most flexible in Honda, capable of manufacturing both four and six-cylinder engines on the same line," said John Pleiman, assistant vice president and Engine Group leader. "This unparalleled level of flexibility, together with expansion of our production capacity, enables us to meet customer requirements and market demand for current and future Acura and Honda products. "The new V6 engine is what we call a 'mother-line-less' product," said Pleiman. "It is unique to the Anna Engine Plant with no previous production in Japan. We established a 140-member associate team from Anna for this V6 development and plant expansion, including U.S. members in Japan." As a result of this global teamwork, development time for the new V6 engine was reduced by one full year -- from 36 months to 24 months. Early supplier involvement in the V6 development resulted in high quality, improved performance and cost efficiencies. The new V6 engine contains more then 200 parts from 55 domestic suppliers, 10 of them new to Honda. These suppliers brought new technology and cost-effective manufacturing techniques to the project, including the use of powdered metal bearing caps, a new ductile iron camshaft, and a new full-floating piston pin design. With a capacity of 900,000 engines a year, the Anna Engine Plant becomes the largest single source of engines for Honda in the world. The new engine line can produce up to 1,650 units a day on two shifts, both four and six-cylinder engines. Initially, V6 engine production will be about 100 a day. The new 3.0 liter V6 will be used in the Acura 3.OCL Coupe which begins mass production on September 10 at the East Liberty Auto Plant. Later, a variation of the new V6 will power the all-new Honda minivan to he produced at Honda of Canada Mfg. in 1998. Honda of America Mfg. employs more then 11,500 associates at its four plants in central Ohio with a capital investment of $3.15 billion. Products manufactured include the Acura CL series; the Accord Sedan, Coupe and Wagon; the Civic Sedan and Coupe; the Gold Wing, Valkyrie and other large capacity motorcycles and ATVs; and engines and drivetrain components for both automobiles and motorcycles.
