Volkswagen Sales Up Again -- Best August Since 1987 AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 4 via Individual Inc. -- Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its best August sales results in the U.S. in nine years. The German automaker sold 15,176 new cars in August, representing a 19.8 percent increase over 1995's August figure of 12,668. It was Volkswagen's best August since 1987 and its best month overall since June 1990. For the year, Volkswagen has sold 94,261, up 15 percent over the same period in 1995 when the mark was 81,946. Once again, Volkswagen's sales were led by its popular Jetta model which enjoyed one of its best single month totals ever. Jetta sales for August were 10,436, up 31 percent over 1995 when they were 7,964. Sales of Volkswagen's mid-sized Passat sedan and wagon were up as well, totaling 1,854, an increase of 12.5 percent over 1995's mark of 1,648. Year- to-date, Passat sales in 1996 are 14,232, up 38.2 percent from 1995. "Clearly, August's results show that the sales momentum we have been enjoying the last two years is building. Jetta sales are especially encouraging, topping the 10,000 mark for the first time in many years. In the important mid-sized market, our Passat sales are well ahead of last year and the best since the model's introduction in 1990," said Clive Warrilow, President and CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc.
