Mitsubishi Announces Sales for August 1996 and the Calendar-Year-to-Date

Poised to Launch Several All-New '97 Models, Mitsubishi Motors Reports August Sales are up 1% From Previous Year

CYPRESS, Calif., Sept. 4 -- Mitsubishi Motor Sales of
America, Inc. (MMSA) reported today that its August 1996 vehicle sales
of 15,013 units represents a 1 percent increase over the previous
year.

"We're pleased with our August performance since we've been gearing up
to launch several all-new '97 products -- the Diamante luxury
performance sedan and the Mirage coupe and sedan -- as well as
providing for substantial improvements and refinements to our other
'97 products," says Kevin Ormes, group vice president of sales and
marketing for MMSA. "We've been focusing on '97 production and selling
out of our '96 inventory."

'97 Mirage sedans began to enter dealer showrooms in August. The
Mirage coupes will be on sale in the middle of this month. '97
Diamante LS sedans will be in Mitsubishi Motors' dealership showrooms
in October.

Later in the '97 model year, in addition to Diamante and Mirage,
Mitsubishi Motors will be introducing a new entry into the sport
utility segment -- the Montero Sport.

Sales of Mitsubishi Motors' sales leading passenger car, the Eclipse
sports coupe, built in Illinois, were 5,601 units, up 25 percent from
the previous August. Sales of Eclipse Spyder convertible, also
"imported" from Illinois, were robust, at almost 700 units. Dealers
have asked if the factory can increase production of the popular
convertible.

Domestic sales -- including Eclipse and the Galant mid-size sedan --
were 10,330, up 33 percent from the year-before period.

Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc., was established in 1982 by
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, Tokyo, and markets a full line of
subcompacts, mid-size sedans, sports coupes, grand touring sports
cars, luxury performance sedans, light trucks and sport utility
vehicles.
