"Boyd-Look" Hot Rodded Volvo Supports Children's Arthritis Benefit
09/05/96
Boy Oh Boyd -- It's A Volvo Children Suffering with Arthritis Benefit ROCKLEIGH, N.J., Sept. 3 -- The Volvo 850 Turbo sportswagon caught the attention of hot rod designer and builder Boyd Coddington. In a joint project with Volvo Cars of North America, Inc., Boyd and his team Hot Rods by Boyd customized the sportswagon with a "Boyd-look." In July, Volvo and Boyd loaned the hot-rodded Volvo sportswagon to Monica Wood to support a charitable project. Monica, a physical education teacher from Manhattan Beach, California, wanted to help children who suffered from arthritis, but she needed a car. Her plan was to travel across the United States collecting sports memorabilia that would eventually be auctioned by the Arthritis Foundation. The proceeds would benefit Camp Esperanza, a summer camp for children afflicted with arthritis. The venture, called the "Trip of Dreams," started July 6 and ended mid-August. For six weeks and through thirty-five states, Monica and her mother Shirley drove the "Boyd-look" Volvo to baseball and football stadiums, raceways and even the Olympics in their successful quest of collecting sports memorabilia. The hot-rodded Volvo was a real attention getter no matter where they traveled. This special "Boyd-look" hot-rodded Volvo sportswagon will be on display September 7 at the 15th annual 1996 Volvo National West Coast Convention to be held at the Holiday Inn, 7000 Beach Blvd., Buena Park, California.
