Subaru Announces Strongest Consecutive Monthly Sales Since 1990

Subaru Sales Stay Strong/ Strongest Back-to-Back Monthly Sales Since 1990

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 3 -- Subaru of America,
Inc. (SOA) today announced its August sales figures. Subaru sales hit
a year-to-date total of 74,631 units -- up 23.4 percent over the same
period in 1995. The figures represent the continuing success of the
company which has also enjoyed ten consecutive months of
year-over-year increases.

For the second consecutive month, Subaru posted sales in excess of
10,000 units. August retail sales (excluding fleet) were 10,329 --
representing its strongest back-to-back monthly sales since
August/September 1990. The Legacy line led sales results with 8,398
retail sales -- an all-time Legacy retail sales record. Within the
Legacy line, the Subaru Outback accounted for 4,758 retail sales --
also a new sales record.

"These figures signify that our all-wheel drive positioning and
message are connecting with consumers," said George Muller, SOA
president and chief operating officer.

Starting this month, the 1997 Legacy Outback Limited, Outback Sport
and Legacy 2.5 GT are available in over 630 Subaru dealerships
nationwide.
