Costa Rican Court Lifts Ban on Volkswagen Imports

09/03/96

Reuters has reported that the Costa Rican Supreme Court temporarily lifted a ban on imports of all Volkswagen A.G. products imposed by a lower court as part of a civil suit against the German carmaker.

Court spokesman Fabian Barrantes said, "the prohibition (of Volkswagen imports) is suspended until the Constitutional Court resolves the lawsuit."

The ban prohibited all Volkswagen cars, parts and machinery from entering Costa Rica until the company paid a $1 million deposit in a case in which a former Volkswagen sales representative sued the company for replacing him with another agent.

A Volkswagen representaive in Costa Rica said the company has 8,000 to 10,000 cars on the road in the country and projects sales of 300 new cars for 1997.
