Chrysler Says Mexico Plant Not New
08/28/96
Reuters reported that Chrysler Corporation issued a correction to a Notimex report that mis-reported its plans for a Chrysler plant in Saltillo, Mexico, 150 miles South of the Northern Mexican city of Monterrey.
Chrysler said that Notimex, the Mexican government news agency, referred to the satellite plant as a new project. Chrysler said that they had actually announced the plant last year, and that it has been under construction since May 1995. Chrysler expects the plant to be operational by the first quarter of next year.
The announced Saltillo stamping plant will make parts for Chrysler trucks being assembled in an adjacent facility, which was dedicated in April 1995. Chrysler spokesman Leo Silva said, "the stamping plant is really part of the truck plant."
