UAW Discusses Longer Term Contract with Big Three Carmakers

08/27/96

According to Reuters, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the United Auto Workers and Detroit's Big Three carmakers are discussing adopting a national contract that would last longer than the traditional three-year agreement. The UAW's current contract with the automakers expires on September 14. The union and the car companies are considering a five- or six-year agreement, said officials from both sides.

Reuters also reported that the UAW has been able to settle some contentious local issues with General Motors at the national bargaining table. The progress shows that both sides are interested in avoiding a confrontation this fall. A GM spokesman said, "issues are bring resolved as fast as they're being brought up."
