Transportation Dept. Makes Move To Lessen Truck Accidents
08/26/96
The U.S. Secretary of Transportation announced a department ruling that would require big trucks to be equipped with reflective materials which would make them more visible and lessen highway crashes. The NHTSA says that nighttime crashes involving big trucks totaled 11,000 with 8,700 injuries and 540 deaths. The NHTSA's new rule will require reflectors or reflective sheeting at the top of cabs in a pattern similar to that already used on the trailers they tow. The new rule becomes effective July 1, 1997. The cost to manufacturers will be less than $10.00 per truck.
