Toyota and Daihatsu Consider Venture in India

08/21/96

Comline has reported that Toyota Motor Corporation and Daihatsu are considering a new production venture in India. The firms' talks with a mid-sized Indian conglomerate start in September and a feasibility study will be conducted.

The mid-sized conglomerate builds industrial-use engines and production machinery, but not automobiles. The feasibility study will focus on how the Indian group would fare as an automaker. Toyota was hoping to set up passenger car manufacturing with another Indian group, but talks fell apart in March 1996 over equity and production specifics.
