General Motors Committed to Helping People with Disabilities COLLEGE PARK, Ga., Aug. 16 -- General Motors is a major exhibitor at Abilities Expo International August 16-18 at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park, GA. The GM Mobility exhibit includes information about the GM Mobility Program as well as similar programs offered by the Saturn Corporation and GM of Canada. The GM display also features a GMC Sonoma 3-Door extended cab pickup with a wheelchair lifter installed behind the driver's seat; the all new Chevrolet Express Van with a side wheelchair lift; and an Oldsmobile Eighty Eight with a wheelchair carrier on top of the vehicle, as well as a wheelchair lifter in the trunk. Another featured display is the CHAIRIOT, a human arm-powered recumbent tricycle fitted with a custom-designed aerodynamic shell built by the GM Research & Development Center in Warren, MI. Built exclusively for research purposes in order for General Motors to learn more about the mobility needs of people with disabilities, the Chairiot set several land speed records last year. The two riders who set the speed records -- Tracy Miller & Jacob Heilveil -- will sign daily autographs at the GM booth. Both Tracy and Jacob are also competing in the Paralympic Games. General Motors Corporation has been committed to helping customers requiring adaptations meet their transportation needs through the GM Mobility Program for Persons with Disabilities. Since 1991, owners of more than 30,000 GM cars, vans and light duty trucks received reimbursements of up to $1,000 each toward aftermarket adaptive equipment installed on eligible new GM vehicles. In addition, GM extended its Program in 1995 to include alerting devices (siren detectors and enhanced turn signal reminders) for drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing.
