Honda Receives No Word about Reported Penalties

08/20/96

Kyodo has reported that Honda responded to last week's USA Today report that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would ask a the U.S. Justice Department to fine the carmaker for not notifying the government about seat belt safety problems by saying that it has not been notified of any such plans.

Honda said that it was surprised by the newspaper report because the company had never considered that the NHTSA would ask the Justice Department to impose penalties. A spokesman for the NHTSA refused to comment on the issue, saying simply that the NHTSA has nothing to say for now.

Honda said they have made inquiries at the NHTSA but that they have received no response.
