Toyota's North American Production Up Ten Percent Over 1995;
Purchasing from U.S. Suppliers Hits New Record

NEW YORK, Aug. 13 -- Toyota Motor Corporate Services of
New York (TMCS) announced today that
year-to-date production of Toyota vehicles in North America are up
more than 10% over 1995. As of July's end Toyota produced 469,624
vehicles in North America. Thus far in 1996, six out of every ten
Toyota vehicles sold in America were built in America.

Also in July, Toyota announced that it had purchased a record $6.47
billion in auto parts from 496 U.S. suppliers during fiscal
1995. This is the highest total ever purchased in one year by Toyota
and exceeded the amount projected a year earlier than expected. Toyota
had previously announced its expectation to purchase $6.45 billion
from U.S. suppliers by the end of fiscal 1996. Of the total, $1.34
billion was purchased and exported for production of Toyota vehicles
in Japan. Over the past five years, Toyota s cumulative auto parts
purchasing from U.S. suppliers now exceeds $24 billion.

Exports of North American-built vehicles to Japan are up over 35% thus
far in 1996 over the same period in 1995. Exports to Japan thus far in
1996 are 19,248 while total exports of North American manufactured
vehicles broke the 30,000 unit for the year in July totaling 32,108
units.

Increased local production, parts purchasing, and exports from North
America are all part of Toyota's Global Business Plan announced in
June, 1995. The plan calls for increased localization of production in
North America, including a target production capacity of 1.1 million
vehicles annually by 1998.

Toyota is currently the fourth largest manufacturer of vehicles in
America with current investment in U.S. manufacturing, sales,
research & development, and parts distribution exceeding $5.8 billion
to date. Toyota's employment in the U.S. exceeds 19,000 and will grow
as its new plants in Gibson County, Indiana and Putnam County, West
Virginia begin hiring next year.
