Nissan Press Release: Nissan Sponsors Adventure TV Show
07/26/96
NISSAN SPONSORS ACTION ADVENTURE TELEVISION SHOW `Pathfinders: Exotic Journeys' Will Air on Three Cable Sports Networks CARSON, Calif., July 25 -- Beginning Aug. 4, 1996, Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A. will sponsor a new adventure travel television series, called "Pathfinders: Exotic Journeys," which will run on three cable sports networks. Hosted by model-turned-designer Cheryl Tieggs, each 30-minute show features two guests and chronicles their adventures in exotic locales. "Pathfinders" is set in a different location each week and takes guests on wild outdoor challenges that test physical and mental boundaries. The show travels to Hell's Canyon for white-water rafting on the Snake river, to the glaciers of Alaska for sea-kayaking, and to Mexico for mountain climbing on the Orizaba Volcano. "This is a unique chance for Nissan to highlight the versatility of its sport utility vehicle -- the Pathfinder," said Joe Opre, manager of sales promotions for Nissan Motor Corporation U.S.A. "In addition, the demographics of the sports utility customer match those of the 'Pathfinders' viewing audience, and our sponsorship of the show gives us a great opportunity to reach this target market." Thirteen episodes of "Pathfinders" are complete and will air Friday evenings on espn2, Rainbow Sports, and Liberty Sports/Group W. "Pathfinders" is a genuine adventure show featuring a unique twist -- each episode stars guests who are not typical daredevils or practiced outdoor types. The show takes these unseasoned adventure travelers -- people who may be used to luxurious surroundings or more "civilized" accommodations -- and forces them to "tough it out" or "rough it" by learning to make do with nature's primitive offerings. "Pathfinders" guests are all leaders in their respective fields -- some guests come from similar backgrounds and share life experiences, and others seem to have little or nothing in common. These sometimes unusual pairings of guests makes for many surprising and enjoyable moments. A sampling of the show's guests includes: best-selling author Amy Tan; volleyball star Sinjin Smith; pop rock musician Danny Elfman, founder of Oingo Boingo; fashion designer Nicole Miller; and John Peterman, creator of the J. Peterman catalogue. In North America, Nissan's operations include styling, engineering, manufacturing, sales, consumer and corporate finance, and industrial and textile equipment. Nissan in North America employs more than 22,000 people in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and generates nearly 75,000 jobs through its 1,594 Nissan and Infiniti dealerships across the continent.
