Toyota Gets Help Producing Sports Utility Vehicle in Japan

07/24/96

Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that another Japanese firm will help it produce its Japanese Hilux Surf sport utility vehicle. Hino Motors Ltd. will produce 2,000 of Toyota's Hilux Surf models each month, starting in September.

Toyota sold an average of 6,500 Hilux Surfs between January and June, exceeding the company's target of 5,000. Toyota's share of Japan's domestic vehicle market fell below 40% during the first half of 1996, but the company plans to use its increased sales of sport utility vehicles to boost its market share back up to at least 41% in the second half of this year.
