Chrysler Pulls The Plug On Natural Gas Vehicles

07/19/96

Citing high production costs and low sales, Chrysler Corp has announced it will not build any natural gas versions of its '97 vans, minivans and pickup trucks. This comes at an odd time, as federal regulations mandating that state governments purchase alternative fuel vehicles are about to go into effect. Chrysler's pull out also comes at a time when government research shows that factory-built alternative fuel cars have less pollutants than vehicles equipped with aftermarket kits. GM pulled out of this race in 1994, so this leaves Ford all alone in the market. They sold 2,200 units in 1996.
