Toyota Develops Fuel Saver

07/11/96

NikkeiNet reports that Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a way to cut fuel use by 1-2%. The savings in fuel economy will come from a 40% reduction of rotary friction resistance between shim and camshaft. The technology will be introduced with new models this fall.

Toyota will polish shims and coat them with titanium nitride. The automaker will leave the titanium surfaces uneven so that they contact with the camshaft grinds them down, making for smoother contact between shim and camshaft.
