U.S. Carmakers Place More Orders with Japanese Parts Makers

07/09/96

The Japanese press is reporting that U.S. auto manufacturers are outsourcing more and more parts as the dollar shows strong against the Japanese yen. The Japanese parts industry has seen a jump in orders from the U.S.'s Big Three carmakers. The situation coincides with Japanese parts makers' plan to expand operations in North America

NikkeiNet reports that Ford has contracted to buy 13 billion yen worth of brake parts from Akebono Brake Industry Co, as well as 350,000 suspension parts from NHK Spring Co. for more than 700 million yen. General Motors Corporation is expected to buy 300,000 air conditioners from Calsonic Corporation this year, in a deal that is worth 6-9 billion yen.
