Feds Give Chrysler July, 8 Ultimatum or It's Law Suit Time
06/25/96
In an unprecedented move, the NHTSA told Chrysler that the company has until July 8 to order a recall of 91,000 Cirrus and Stratus '96 models for faulty rear seat belt anchors. If Chrysler doesn't comply the NHTSA will file suit against the corporation. Chrysler has already told the Department of Transportation that they will not comply with the mandate, so legal action is imminent.
Federal administrator Ricardo Martinez, M.D. said, "this is the first time the government has had to go to court to compel a vehicle maker to comply with a recall order on a noncompliance safety standard."
