U.S. to Abide by a WTO Finding on Gasoline Standards
06/20/96
The World Trade Organization has found that U.S. gasoline standards violate free-trade rules and discriminate against foreign gasoline. The finding was made in response to a case that Venezuela and Brazil brought against the U.S. in front of the WTO. The countries objected to a United States Environmental Protection Agency rule based on the U.S.'s Clean Air Act that set higher standards for the removal of contaminants from foreign gasoline. The United States has announced that it will abide by the WTO's ruling.
