Big Three Auto Makers to Boost Production in Third Quarter

06/18/96

The Big Three U.S. carmakers will boost production in the third quarter of this year to compensate for the greater consumer demand they expect throughout the summer and into the fall. GM, Ford, and Chrysler announced that they will increase their combined production 5.6% above what it was during the same period last year.

Ford plans the biggest production boost, as they anticipate hiking output by 8.6 percent. GM's boost in production will be the smallest, up only 1.4 percent over last year. The announcement came the week after contract negotiations with the UAW began. The union has announced that one of the issues they will be bargaining about will be the ever-increasing over-time burden that the automakers are putting on workers' shoulders.
