Toyota Sets Up Joint Engine Manufacturing Venture in China

Toyota Motor Corp. has set up a joint venture with Chinas Tianjin Automobile Industrial Group to make 1.3 liter auto engines. Production will begin in 1998 on the small engines that power cars like the Daihatsu Charade and output is expected to reach 15,000 units per year.In the past Toyota has been unsuccessful in attempting to establish an assembly plant in China, thus the joint venture. Toyota has also announced that they may design a small car for the Chinese market.
