Chrysler Press Release: Millionth Jeep Grand Cherokee Rolls Off Line
04/30/96
CHRYSLER PRODUCES 1 MILLIONTH JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE DETROIT, April 26 -- The one-millionth Jeep(R) Grand Cherokee was driven off the Jefferson North Assembly line this morning to the cheers of several hundred of the plant's employees and Detroit- area Jeep Eagle dealers. "The popularity of this vehicle has blown away everyone's expectations with more than 10 off-road awards since its introduction in 1992," Plant Manager John Franciosi told employees attending the plant-wide celebration. "We started with Motor Trend's Truck of the Year in 1992 and just recently won Petersen's 4X4 of the Year and Four Wheeler's Four-Wheeler of the Year." Franciosi went on to discuss record sales performances for Chrysler's established sport utility vehicle. "The Grand Cherokee set model year and calendar year sales records last year. And this year, sales are up 10 percent so far." Production of the Jeep Grand Cherokee began in January 1992 following Chrysler's investment of $1 billion in a new inner-city plant -- reversing an auto industry trend to build new plants in rural communities. The commitment is widely acclaimed as the largest investment in Detroit history -- a record Chrysler still holds. "The milestone we reached today is a direct tribute to the outstanding work of our UAW members -- both past and present," said Frank "Moon" Massey, Chairman UAW Local 7. The 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to build on its preeminence as the flagship of the Jeep brand. The '96 Grand Cherokee brings the latest and best of what Jeep has to offer the market with dual air bags, an all-new interior and even more refinement in comfort and performance features. Detroit-area Jeep Eagle dealers have highlighted the plant's role in producing the Grand Cherokee in local advertisements. The ads have predominantly shown the workers and the local assembly plant in an attempt to bring "made in Detroit pride" to the popular sport utility. Chrysler's Jefferson North Assembly Plant employs approximately 4,300 people, on three shifts, building about 1,174 vehicles each day. The plant has over 206 robots and 934 computer systems. 1995 annual payroll was $216 million with an additional $6.7 million paid in taxes.
