GM Plans Sports Utility Vehicle for Police

04/12/96

United Press International reported that GM announced plans to start producing a full-size sport utility pursuit vehicle for law enforcement purposes. The SUV will be the first of its kind, has been dubbed the Vortec V8 Tahoe, and should be available next year.

GM displayed the vehicle at auto shows in Detroit and Los Angeles. The company reported that the preview sparked interest across the country. John Middlebrook, GM's soon-to-be general manager, said, "we got calls from federal agencies, state police and municipal police departments scattered across the country, and could have taken orders for thousands of police Tahoes."

The Tahoe is a full-size, four-door, two-wheel-drive sport utility vehicle powered by Chevrolet's new Vortec 5700 V8 with sequential fuel injection. The engine generates 250 horsepower, making the vehicle ideal for high-speed pursuit.
