I will never know how it happened or whose idea it was but when I took the new and amazing Cadillac Lyriq to Tony’s Seafood restaurant in Marshall, California the man on the door said “how come you were not here two weeks ago?!”

Apparently a cast of thousands have descended on this exceptional seafood restaurant thousands of miles from Detroit. Whichever way they got there I think they had as good a time as I did. The difference is that from where I live It is just an hour away so all I can think of that some local dealer much have tipped them off.

Tony's is part of the legendary Hog Island Oyster Company and as they say in the guide books-well worth a detour, especially if you are driving something as exciting as the Lyriq.

I have not been a huge fan of EVs but this one changed my mind. The car I drove after this felt positively antiquated.

What I hear you ask is what,s the big deal? Well, first of all is its stunning styling...”futuristic” is the best way to describe it.

Whilst looking truly 21st Century it did not deviate from Cadillac’s idea of what is a comfortable ride. If you are like the so-called experts working on specialist magazines...you know the writer's I'm taking about...22 years old with 10 years experience, than you will be mortified that the Cadillac Lyriq does not handle like a Covette. The acceleration is nothing to write home about but yet again Caddy was not looking for a drag racer.

Having driven the Lyriq for a week I thought the acceleration was perfectly adequate. We are talking about boulevard cruiser, an updated version of that the Great Gatsby folks drove in the roaring 20s.

Lyric has a range of approximately 300 miles, plenty for a dash up to the Sierras where I found a myriad of EV chargers outside the excellent sushi restaurant.

The astonishing thing is that you can get a new 2025 Cadillac Lyric for about 60 thousand dollars. Astonishing because rivals such as the BMW iX starts at 88 thousand dollars and the Volvo EX90 at 81!

When I first heard that Cadillac are entering Formula One in 2026 I was wondering why? Now that I have driven a Caddy which can hold a candle to the finest Germany can offer I understand it.

I am not going to get involved min the pros and cons of tariffs because these change all the time but once things settle down don’t be surprised to see more Cadillac's on the streets of Paris and Rome.
