WASHINGTON, D.C. oCTOBER 4, 2024; Toyota Motor Corp. will reportedly delay the company’s production of electric vehicles in the United States, citing design adjustments and slowing EV sales. This announcement that the company will delay EV production until mid-2026 comes on the heels of reports that Toyota would cut 30% of its overall EV production in 2026.

Recently, Ford announced a 12% increase in electric vehicle sales in the third quarter, and GM announced that sales of electric vehicles in the third quarter jumped 60% compared to this time last year.

In response, Adam Zuckerman, senior clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“With this announcement, Toyota shows again that it’s bent on transforming itself from the world’s largest automaker into ‘The Little Engine That Can’t.’ While other automakers establish themselves as market leaders, Toyota can’t meet its own weak, market-lagging EV goals.”
