Ann Arbor, MI (August 22, 2024) – Car and Driver has named the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N the 2024 EV of the Year in its fourth annual comparison test of electric vehicles. Over the course of three weeks, the field of 18 new or significantly updated cars, trucks, and SUVs were driven, compared, and evaluated by Car and Driver’s editors. Each vehicle went through rigorous instrumented testing, including a 75-mph highway test to evaluate real-world range. This is the third year in a row that a Hyundai has taken the coveted title. Last year, the Ioniq 6 took top honors, preceded by the Ioniq 5 in 2022. The inaugural EV of the Year was the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

“We’re skeptical of fakery, which makes what Hyundai has done with the Ioniq 5 N so remarkable. For the first time, an EV has the joy, the shifts, the power delivery, and even the sound of an internal-combustion powertrain,” said Tony Quiroga, Editor-in-Chief of Car and Driver, in his Editor’s Letter in the September/October issue. “The possibilities mean that for the first time in a long time, I’m hopeful EVs will have the character and provide the experience of the gas cars they seek to replace.”

Car and Driver tested the contenders over three weeks through instrumented testing, subjective evaluation, and side-by-side comparisons, taking into consideration both practicality and entertainment value. The criteria for determining the EV of the Year are the same used for selecting Car and Driver’s long-running 10Best Award winners, with one proviso. In addition to delivering exceptional driving engagement, offering indisputable value and/or practicality, and fulfilling its mission better than any of its competitors, the EV of the Year winner must possess cutting-edge technology or apply technology in a new or novel way to, as the editors describe it, “advance the species.”

The 17 other vehicles competing for EV of the Year were the Acura ZDX, Audi Q8 e-tron, BMW i5 eDrive 40, BMW i5 M60i, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV AWD, Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Fiat 500e, Fisker Ocean, Honda Prologue, Hyundai Kona EV, Kia EV9, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, Polestar 2, Tesla Cybertruck, and the Volkswagen ID.4.
