??    The human rights violations documented in her book, “The Pathway Towards Peace: U.S. Human Rights Manifesto.??
??    Actions companies can take to clean up their supply chains.
??    Actions consumers can take to ensure they are buying their favorite products from companies that have pledged slavery-free supply chains.

In addition to coordinating an interview, I can also provide you with high-res images and related background information. Please see the press release below for additional information.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Activist/Author Jánelle Marina Méndez Calls for Stronger Actions During Universal Human Rights Month

(NYC, NY) November 11, 2023 — December recognizes International Slavery Abolition Day and is the Universal Month for Human Rights. There are an estimated 46.9 million enslaved people around the world. About 70% of them are women and girls. “Sexual slavery is the most profitable industry with annual returns of 90%,?? states award-winning human rights activist Jánelle Marina Méndez Viera, author of  “The Pathway Towards Peace: U.S. Human Rights Manifesto.?? But sadly, it’s not the only form of slavery.

“We’re worse off now than we were in the 1800s when slavery was abolished. People don’t realize that it is still going on. Many think of slavery as being chained and beaten in public. This is a new era of slavery. I want to help increase awareness so we can take care of this problem.

“Wage exploitation and other human rights abuses are also forms of slavery. For example, propaganda perpetuates the idea that some people just aren’t working hard enough to better themselves, when low wages are why they can’t go to school and they don’t have good credit.??

She’s also bringing to light that vulnerable young men are being radicalized on social media platforms to believe some groups are inferior to others, with the goal of making human rights abuses and violence more acceptable to them.

After experiencing modern slavery first hand, Méndez Viera is dedicating her life to abolishing it within the next 10 years through education, action and advanced financial technologies. By age 33, she had become a certified human rights consultant, and lobbied for and achieved changes in nearly every level of government. Her innovative and socially responsible approach to business is inspiring others in industry to prioritize human rights and ethical practices.

Méndez Viera’s life experiences fuel her drive for change

Méndez Viera, a Puerto-Rican American, grew up in New York. At age 16, she was recruited into the U.S. Marine Corp, where she endured multiple forms of sexual violence. She endured torture after reporting she was a victim of child pornography and child-sex trafficking while attending a military occupational school in Missouri. Méndez Viera fled the base after her experiences of abuse were covered up and she was prevented from accessing legal and medical assistance.

Still in the military, she also experienced rape, forced prostitution and retaliatory incarceration (for charges later dismissed). She was forced to accept a retaliatory discharge at age 18, after another set of charges was filed against her.

Human rights activism becomes her passion

While still in her early 20s, the increasingly outspoken Méndez Viera founded the Military Sexual Trauma Movement, and advocated for better healthcare and policy reform for victims of military sexual trauma and protection for LGBTQ+ veterans.

Méndez Viera has been recognized for her human rights advocacy, most notably for authoring and successfully lobbying for the Restoration of Honor Act of 2019. Other legislative successes include the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military, signed into law by President Joseph Biden in 2021. “I am proud to have become this century's most influential person for military and veterans’ rights in the U.S.,?? she says. She has also influenced legislation as well as policies at the Pentagon.

In 2022, she earned a human rights award, honoring her groundbreaking self-funded research on modern slavery in the Caribbean and its ties to American politics.

Educating others about social reform

Méndez Viera’s vision to abolish wants to educate others about what perpetuates modern day slavery and what reduces it. “There are actions you can take,?? she stresses. “Get involved and learn which policies need to change.

“Be conscious about spending your money with companies that focus on a slavery-free supply chain. The U.S. government requires all Fortune 500 companies to have a modern slavery statement or protocol, and post it on their websites. Also check human rights websites such as Amnesty International, which posts reports on slavery-free supply chains.

Méndez Viera’s book, “The Pathway Towards Peace: U.S. Human Rights Manifesto??, is also a good place to start. It documents Haitians’ enslavement in the Dominican Republic for American exports and investments, while examining male psychology in the U.S. Méndez Viera discusses her new theory called psychosocial racism and sexism. Awareness and education will help shine the light on these issues including violence toward women and minorities.
