The Newest Addition to the Honda-Acura Hall of Fame
|
Special Correspondent to THE AUTO CHANNEL
Twenty-two years ago I was in Japan, flinging a 2001 Acura Integra Type R around Honda's home test track called Twin Ring Motegi. That 2,650 pound, 2-door coupe went like the wind. It was nimble, quick in a straight line, and exceptionally responsive in the turns. Under the hood lay a 1.8 liter, 4-cylinder fuel injected motor making 195hp and 130lb.-ft. of torque. Back in the day, that was a lot of power to extract from such a small displacement engine. Now fast forward to Acura's introduction of the 2024 Integra Type S. This newest addition to Honda's Hall of Fame also features a four-cylinder power unit, this one displacing 2 liters. With intercooling and turbocharging, output peaks at 320hp and 310lb.-ft. of torque. At 3,212 pounds, the 2024 Integra Type S has put on 562 pounds compared to its predecessor.
So does the much lighter 2001 Integra Type R hold a power-to-weight ratio advantage over the 2024 Type S? A resounding No. The 2001 Type R posted a respectable 13.58 pounds per horsepower while the new Type S blows it into the weeds with a power/weight ratio of 10.03 lbs/hp. The original Type R posted a 0-60mph time of 7.0 seconds, while its successor leaps from zero to sixty in 5.1 seconds. The rest of the speed calculations for the 2024 version are equally stunning, with the quarter-mile sprint taking just 12.3 seconds at 105mph, on the way to a top speed of 167mph. At that speed the Integra's is turning just 6,450rpm in sixth gear. The only way to get sixth gear is to shift into it yourself, because the Integra Type S comes with a stick shift and clutch, period. No automation allowed or offered in the gear department. Acura has provided you with a perfectly shaped, ball-topped aluminum shift knob which makes gear-changing a rewarding tactile sport, like fly fishing.
The Type S is largely based on the resilient platform Honda utilizes to underpin its Civic Type R. But Acura has taken the Type R one giant step further by upgrading the interior of the Type S with much more spacious and livable sport seats covered with perforated ultrasuede that put the buckets in the Honda Type R to shame. The same can be said for the other interior furnishings in this Acura. The steering wheel is artful and inviting, with perforated leather wrapping that invites your strong grip. Our test car featured a striking combination of red and black upholstery which connoted the racy nature of the ride without trumping good taste. Little touches make the ride extra pleasant, like illuminated door panel pinstripes that give you guidance at night. Acura also provides clearly labeled buttons and knobs to ensure you never have to divert your eyes from the road to complete basic housekeeping chores like HVAC operation. In every way, the interior of the Type S works with you rather than against you when you're trying to concentrate on your line through a set of turns, the gear you've selected, and the amount of throttle you'll need at the apex. In a driver-oriented ride like this Integra, every other consideration is secondary to these basic requirements.
Capping off the Acura's unerring accuracy in road placement are a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S radials with an extremely short sidewall (265/30R19) plus a very sticky treadwear rating (TW 300). For extra contact patch adhesion, Acura has mounted these street-legal race tires on a set of extra wide 9.5 x 19-inch alloy rims. As a final touch, Acura has added Brembo 13.8 inch diameter, 4-piston front disc brakes for aircraft carrier-style stops. When you lock the suspension down into Sport+ Drive Mode, you'll feel every divot in the pavement as the Type S has virtually zero compliance over even minor imperfections. But you'll also feel locked to the road with such certainty that deviation from your chosen line is inconceivable. It's hard to believe that any other four-door, four-seat sedan is faster from Point A to Point B in real-world driving conditions.
The only objection we had was our inability to disengage the mindless Lane Keeping nanny. Despite turning off this system as instructed by the Owner's Manual, Lane Departure continually intervened by shaking the steering wheel every time we made a lane change or even deviated slightly from what our Acura deemed to be the correct position in a lane. We briefly resorted to leaving our turn signal on all the time in order to fool the system. How ridiculous to be forced into driving like a forgetful idiot! It was especially galling in a vehicle expressly designed for high performance driving.
