New EV Legislation: New Homes and Developments to be fitted with EV Chargers

* New EV charging law could save new homeowners between £300-400 on installation costs. * To achieve net zero by 2050, all new homes will be required to be equipped with EV chargers. * An estimated 145,000 EV chargers will be installed across England each year due to these new regulations.

A new Electric Vehicle law has come into effect in the UK that could potentially save drivers hundreds of pounds. This new legislation will see new homes and buildings required to have an EV charger installed.

The EV team at YESSS Electrical<> reviewed the legislation to see how it will affect homeowners and building developments across the UK.

What Is the New Law and Who Does It Affect?

The EV team found that the new law will affect all new building developers and new home buyers, from the 15th June 2022.

In attempts to achieve zero emissions by 2050, new homes and buildings in England will be required to have EV charging points fitted. The new regulations mean that any building development, with parking, must have access to an electric car charging point.

Any other buildings undergoing large-scale redevelopments will also be required to have an EV charger installed. This law does not affect any plans submitted before that date, unless work hasn't started before the 15th June 2023.

It is estimated that these regulations will help to install another 145,000 EV chargers per year, across England. The new EV law is funded by the UK Government, with a £1.6 billion investment in the EV industry. As stated by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, this is a "pivotal moment" for the UK in its attempt to reduce carbon emissions to zero.

While the new law is a step in the right direction, it does have the risk that 'one size doesn't always fit all.' Depending on factors such as electricity tariffs, the number of EVs per household and EV charging cable compatibility, the homeowner may have no choice but to replace the charger.

What Are the Benefits of Switching to an EV?

1. Driving Experience

Not only are they extremely safe, but they provide you with an entirely new driving experience. Most EVs have regenerative braking which uses braking energy to charge the battery along with silent running and improved handling.

2. Cost Effective Running

The maintenance cost of EVs is also much lower than that of diesel and petrol options. Electric vehicles are powered by a battery and do not require a clutch, cambelt or oil filter.

3. Hassle-Free

Electric cars are entirely hassle-free. Simply plug your EV in overnight, and it will always be fully charged when you wake up.

Mike Gadd, Head of EV & Energy at YESSS Electrical said: "Charging at public EV charging stations means planning a journey in advance, and can often lead to drivers being caught short.

"The new Building Regulations are a great step forward for the EV industry. Providing residents with a home EV charger can encourage them to make the switch to an electric vehicle faster as it's simple, convenient and the installation is cost-free.

"These plans hope to help the UK Government reach 300,000 EV charge points by 2030. This positive step will also help the government work towards the target of net zero emissions by 2050."
