An alcohol-based fuel was used in the first internal combustion engine nearly two hundred years ago. It was the fuel used in the first internal combustion engine vehicles built by Nicholaus Otto and Henry Ford. It was the fuel preferred by Harry Ricardo, one of the foremost engine designers in the early years of the age of automobiles. General Motors' top scientists endorsed it as the ultimate fuel. So WTF happened?

In this series of three reports, The Auto Channel unveils a critical part of the ethanol's historical journey:

Uncovering The Gas Roots of Contemporary Ethanol Opposition

Opposition to alternative fuels almost always stems from the petroleum oil industry; the controlling caste of the global energy world. The reason, needless to say, is financial. No person or entity in a position of power and wealth ever wants to willingly surrender that rank - except George Washington. But to have to go back more than two hundred years to find an exception to the rule proves the rule, as the saying goes.

"Uncovering The Gas Roots..." dealt with HOW the petroleum oil industry has worked to distort the truth about ethanol. This story unmasks William F. Shughart II, a professor at Utah State University and a Senior Fellow at a think tank called Independent Institute. He has a history of working to hide the truth from the public about significant health and safety issues, while using his professional and academic credentials as a front for a phony analysis of ethanol.

Unmasking The Gas Roots of Contemporary Ethanol Opposition - Round 2

Hot on the heels of Economist-Professor Bill Shughart publishing his mendacious ethanol bashing came another dishonest anti-ethanol commentary by yet another "economist-professor" of destinktion with his own version of subjective impressions, out-of-context references, and incorrect analysis of ethanol and the Renewable Fuels Standard. This editorial comes from Gary Wolfram, Professor in Economics and Public Policy at Hillsdale College.
