Sacramento – According to tracking by Veloz (http://www.veloz.org/) – Californians are buying electric cars at a sharper rate of increase, with year-over-year increases in sales for all twelve months in 2018, total electric car sales increasing 84 percent from 2017 to 2018 and, comparing the start and end of 2018, the state saw a 312 percent increase in sales.
“‘Electric For All’ is becoming a reality,?? said Josh Boone, executive director of Veloz. “As electric SUVs and trucks break into the market in the coming years, everyone will be able to discover a better way to drive, no matter your lifestyle, hobby or occupation. If this growth continues, 2019 will be another record breaking year.??
Veloz’s monthly “Sales Dashboard?? (http://www.veloz.org/sales-dashboard/) tracking news summary:
· Comparing start and end of year electric car sales for 2018, January sales were 5,991 and December sales were 24,686, a 312 percent increase. According to market analysts this number is expected to grow significantly in 2019.
· In contrast, there was only a 122 percent increase from January (5,543) to December (12,323) in 2017.
· 2018 saw year-over-year increases in sales for all twelve months in 2018 compared to 2017.
· Total electric car sales increased 84 percent from 2017 (96,847) to 2018 (177,781).
· There were 100 percent higher electric car sales in California in December 2018 compared to December 2017.
· A notable win for the year includes California selling its 500,000th electric car in November (total sales hit 512,717 at the end of month).
The State of California has long worked to implement policies and programs to promote and support the electric vehicle market from instituting a zero emission vehicle goal (http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/zev/) and program (https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/zevprog/zevprog.htm) to offering a generous rebate (https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/lct/cvrp.htm) to buyers. History suggests that Governor Newsom will continue this leadership. As Mayor of San Francisco, he supported e (https://medium.com/@GavinNewsom/a-sustainable-world-can-start-in-california-df8c0d1332d4) lectric vehicle corridors and secured millions of dollars in grant funding for electric car charging infrastructure (https://medium.com/@GavinNewsom/a-sustainable-world-can-start-in-california-df8c0d1332d4) .
“Electric vehicle sales are accelerating at an exciting pace, but to build a truly sustainable market we need to increase public awareness and continue to  deploy a range of incentives to spread EVs throughout the state,?? said CARB Chair Mary D. Nichols.
More electric cars choices and more electric cars on the road leaves a question about charging infrastructure. A report (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy18osti/70893.pdf) found that California will need as many as 279,000 chargers by 2025 to support modest growth of electric car adoption.
“We are focused on building a network of charging stations both in the top metro areas and rural communities of California. The expected growth in new electric vehicles provides a challenge and an opportunity for all of us to accelerate our efforts to build a charging infrastructure for now and in the future,?? said Giovanni Palazzo, president and CEO of Electrify America, LLC. "Electrify America’s customer-centric charging stations are designed to allow Californians to charge where they want, when they want, and as fast as they want. Combined with other providers and the state's commitment to ‘Electric For All,’ these investments will help Californians adopt electric cars in ever greater volumes.??
Veloz recognizes that while electric car sales are increasing, uptake is not happening fast enough to achieve the state’s emissions and electric car sales goals. To boost interest and awareness, Veloz launched the public awareness campaign “Electric For All (https://www.electricforall.org/) ?? to educate and inspire Californian’s to drive electric.
Â
"California is leading the nation's transition to a clean transportation future,?? said Veloz board chair David Hochschild. “Now with over 20,000 electric vehicles per month being sold in California, these vehicles are helping reduce air pollution and build a brighter future for the next generation."
In addition to battery electric and plug-in hybrid car success, California also saw advances in hydrogen fuel cell electric cars. In 2018, eight new hydrogen fueling stations opened, bringing the new total to 39 and more than a dozen new stations are expected in 2019. “With these new stations, we are starting to see our hydrogen network blossom,?? said Tyson Eckerle deputy director of ZEV Infrastructure at the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. “Each station adds convenience for existing drivers, and opportunity for new ones.??
Veloz has its finger on the pulse of California electric car market and releases a detailed report on sales and infrastructure each month. The data is aggregated from a number of trusted sources (http://www.veloz.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/data_calc_details_180911.pdf) and packaged in an easy to read and share “Sales Dashboard (http://www.veloz.org/sales-dashboard/) .?? Watch for this release or check the sales dashboard each month to stay up electric car adoption in the state.
