Thanksgiving Travel - Largest-Ever Connected Vehicle Project Makes Roads Safer & Smarter
Hi Carey!
More than 48.5 million travelers (https://newsroom.aaa.com/2018/11/thanksgiving-travel-forecast-2018/) are expected to drive to their Thanksgiving destination this year, creating dangerous roadways as people rush to get home for the holidays. Â But the largest-ever research project into connected vehicle technology could eliminate gridlock and improve safety.
Just imagine if your car could warn you of the driver three cars ahead who suddenly slams on the brakes or of wet, icy roads ahead. It may seem futuristic, but it’s transportation technology being tested now, allowing cars, traffic lights, crosswalks and other infrastructure to communicate.
The project, a collaboration between DriveOhio (http://drive.ohio.gov/) and local partners, includes a 35-mile stretch of highway and entire city where more than two dozen traffic lights and 1,200 vehicles will be upgraded with connected technology. Experts say the pilot project will make executing the technology nationwide faster and easier, disrupting transportation for the better like we haven’t seen since the creation in the interstate system.
