Mindful Driving Techniques to Reduce your Accident Risk
Hi Larry,
Contrary to popular belief, phones aren’t the biggest cause of distracted driving incidents. It’s your brain. Erie Insurance cites its analysis of data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and reports that 1 in every 10 fatal crashes involves some form of driver distraction, and of those, 61 percent involved a driver who was daydreaming. That compares to about only 14 percent who were using a mobile phone.
What can we do to be more mindful when driving?
Amy Leigh Mercree (http://amyleighmercree.com/) , a wellness coach and medical intuitive who has gained success as an international best-selling author, is sharing two tips for mindful things to do while driving:
1. Challenge yourself to really focus on what you see before you. Bring your singular focus to your vision. Each time your mind wanders away from what you are watching, gently bring it back.
2. Use a mantra to keep you focused. You will be driving and of course completely paying attention to everything around you and the traffic. Safety is your primary focus. And then beyond that to slow down your thoughts you can repeat a word or phrase every time you start thinking about anything besides driving and what you're actually doing. Some great suggestions for your mantra include: “I am love,?? “peace,?? or the Sanskrit word “Shanti,?? which means “peace.?? Or try the word “joy.?? Or a phrase like, “I live with joy.?? Perhaps you might like to say the word "harmony" as your mantra. Whatever you would like to bring more of into your life is a great thing to focus upon.
