News: Matt Brabham Set to "Fly" Again at Road America
SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Presented by Menards Take Flight Aug. 24-25ELKHART LAKE, Wis., August 15, 2018 - The name Brabham is not unfamiliar to Wisconsin's famous Road America circuit, but the vehicle that talented third-generation driver Matt Brabham will be racing as part of the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks races presented by Menards during the NASCAR XFINITY Johnsonville 180 weekend, Friday, August 24 and Saturday August 25 is totally alien.
While every car that has raced at Road America since 1955 has been designed to "stick to the road", the Stadium SUPER Truck Matt will pilot is designed to fly through the air - well, for some of the time anyway!
Matt's grandfather, Sir Jack Brabham, had some of his cars race at the 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course in the 1960s - the same decade in which he clinched two of his three Formula One world championships. Matt's father Geoff enjoyed a lot of success at Road America through his career.
He finished second in an IndyCar event in 1987 and won IMSA GT championship events at the track for Nissan on the way to the first three of four consecutive titles from to 1988-91.
His uncle David has also driven a host of cars there, highlighted by American Le Mans victories in the Patron-backed Acuras in 2008 and 2009. Matt raced at Road America for the first time in 2012 when he had two race wins and a third in a 29-car field on the way to his US F2000 championship.

He has tested a varied list of cars since then and done a lot of driver coaching for young drivers coming through the ranks. Brabham won the American US F2000 and Pro-Mazda Series in record breaking fashion, is a former winner in Indy Lights and finished 16th in his IndyCar debut on the Indianapolis road course in 2016 before qualifying 27th and finishing 22nd in the 100th Indy 500 two weeks later for PIRTEK Team Murray.
Earlier this year Brabham teamed with Tony Longhurst and Aaron Seton to win Class C at the famous Bathurst 12-hour in Australia in The Boat Works GT4 BMW. Last month Brabham won a one-off vintage race at Indianapolis and was competitive on debut in a Mercedes AMG-GT3 in a round of the Pirelli World Challenge at Portland, Oregon before an accident from his teammate ended the day.
All this activity has evolved at the same time that Brabham has led the field in the Stadium SUPER Trucks Championship in the US and Australia where he has won three of 12 races and been on the podium seven times. For those unaware, The SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Truck races presented by Menards will feature four 36-inch tall aluminum ramps placed in strategic locations on the racecourse, allowing the trucks to fly 20 feet off the ground and hundreds of feet down the race course.
Brabham finished second in last year's title chase by a single point, but heads into the Road America event with a 30-point buffer as the championship leader with three scheduled race weekends left in the championship. At the last round at Texas Motor Speedway Brabham recovered from a spectacular rollover on the opening night to win on night two and maintain his championship advantage. The 24 year-old knows that his performance in Stadium SUPER Trucks' first appearance at Road America will be vital to his aspirations of adding the SST title to his already impressive list of motorsport achievements.
The SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks presented by Menards at Road America marks the series' first scheduled race since the back-to-back weekends of Detroit, Michigan and No Limits, Texas back in early June. The series will race on the the front half of Road America, crossing between turns 5 and 13 as compared to the entire 4-mile circuit utilized by NASCAR XFINITY Series and the SCCA Pro Trans Am Series.
Everything for the SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Series presented by Menards begins on Friday morning with a 30-minute practice session at 9:45 a.m., followed by a 30-minute race at 1:35 p.m. The series will then come back Saturday morning at 9:20 a.m., for the SST Shootout which will set the starting grid for the 12:35 p.m. SPEED Energy Stadium SUPER Trucks Series presented by Menards at Road America finale.
Arie Luyendyk Jr. from the ABC series "The Bachelor" will be racing in SST Friday and Saturday
