Car Tariffs Hearing

Washington, D.C.- Governor Matt Blunt, president of the American Automotive Policy Council, today testified before the U.S. Commerce Department at its hearing concerning the Section 232 National Security Investigation:

“As the head of a group representing America's automobile manufacturers in the U.S. we share the Trump administration’s goal of growing the U.S. auto sector, but we have significant concerns with any increase in auto tariffs that could result from this investigation.  Since the industry’s restructuring we have witnessed a surge in our investments, sales, production, exports and employment.  These advancements could be severely undermined by any increase in auto tariffs.

“We urge the Administration to swiftly complete the modernization of NAFTA that includes, among other improvements, acceptance of vehicles built to U.S. auto safety standards, enforceable disciplines against currency manipulation and growing U.S. auto exports by improving access to other markets through the establishment of new free trade agreements.  This has the advantage of avoiding the negative unintended consequences of higher tariffs, while also helping to ensure a bright future for the U.S. auto sector."
