Watkins Glen International set to kick off ’18 season this weekend

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (April 10, 2018) – The 2018 season at Watkins Glen International has arrived – finally.

With the 3.4-mile Grand Prix layout of the historic circuit clear of winter debris, the countdown to fan favorite events – such as June’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, July’s Finger Lakes Wine Festival, August’s Go Bowling at The Glen, and September’s Hilliard U.S. Vintage Grand Prix, among others – is on for fans, staff, and drivers alike.

It all begins, however, with an opportunity to take to the track for a good cause. Each year, Opening Weekend at The Glen benefits the facility’s R.A.C.E. Foundation (Racing and Community Enrichment). In 2018, the foundation is assisting the family of Adirondack Central School senior Ryan Berwick and his family as they purchase a new wheelchair before the teenager’s graduation in June.

“Ryan is a wonderful kid that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know over the last several years,?? WGI President Michael Printup said. “His infectious spirit and passion for the sport and our facility is what I take away from seeing him. This is a chance for us to help him and his family with a purchase that is truly life-changing in many ways. For our fans, Opening Weekend is a great way to shake the cabin fever, enjoy a unique experience on the racetrack, and pitch in for an incredibly worthwhile cause.??

On Saturday, April 14th and Sunday, April 15th, for just $25 per vehicle, guests can experience the twists and turns of The Glen for three paced laps from the driver’s seat of their very own vehicles. The ARC of Schuyler, a non-profit organization providing support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is holding a 3.4-mile run, or one-mile walk on the track on Saturday morning prior to the public and car club laps. The Opening Weekend festivities get started in earnest on Friday, April 13th, when the 14th annual Toyota Green Grand Prix puts a showcase of motoring technology that aims for a cleaner environment. Spectators are welcome to attend the Toyota Green Grand Prix free of charge, with more information at www.greengrandprix.com.

Located within five (5) hours (~300 miles) of 25% of the US population, Watkins Glen International is the premier road racing facility in North America, twice voted “Best NASCAR Track?? by readers of USA Today. Keep up with The Glen on Facebook and Twitter. For tickets, camping, and additional information, call 1-866-461-RACE or visit www.theglen.com.
