Teamsters To Join Parade Calling For Living Wage At Disney
Teamsters Local 385 Members Want Disney to Pay Living Wage at Orlando Theme Parks
(ORLANDO, Fla.) – On Friday, March 23, starting at 5 p.m., Disney workers will lead a parade through Downtown Disney to bring public attention to their fight for a living wage.
The average pay of the more than 38,000 Walt Disney World workers is around $11 per hour, with many workers earning $10 per hour or less. Disney CEO Bob Iger received $36.3 million last year and may receive more than $423 million in compensation over the next four years. Meanwhile, the company is offering an increase of just 50 cents per hour to its workers.
In December, Disney workers overwhelmingly rejected a substandard contract offer from the company containing poverty wages. Disney recently announced it would pay a one-time $1,000 bonus to workers after the company benefited from tax cuts. Disney is now denying its union workers in contract talks this promised benefit unless they agree to a substandard contract.
Teamsters Local 385 represents 4,700 bus drivers, parking attendants, laundry workers, characters and ranch workers at the park. The Teamsters will walk in the parade along with members from five other unions who are united for fair wages and a fair contract at Disney.
