RISI COMPETIZIONE 18-HOUR RACE REPORT

Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM No. 62: Toni Vilander (FIN)
James Calado (GBR)
Alessandro Pier Guidi (ITA)
Davide Rigon (ITA)
Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTD No. 82: Miguel Molina (ESP)
Martin Fuentes (MEX)
Ricardo Perez de Lara (MEX)
Santiago Creel (MEX)
Matt Griffin (IRL)
(Daytona Beach, Fla., January 28, 2018)... Going into the second half of the Rolex
24 At Daytona, the Risi Competizione two-car Ferrari 488 team continued to attempt
to make up laps they had lost earlier in the race. As the early morning hours approached
it was Ferrari factory GT driver Toni Vilander piloting the No. 62 Risi Competizione
Ferrari 488 GTLM and pro Matt Griffin behind the wheel of the No. 82 Risi GTD class
Prancing Horse.
Despite having fast lap times in each of their classes, a noticeably clean race
has left a deficit in cautions in this 56th running of the Rolex 24, therefore both
teams have been unable to gain back much needed laps.
Martin Fuentes was the driver of the No. 82 Risi Ferrari GTD at the 12-hour mark
and had a brief touch with another car but maintained position and was able to
relinquish to teammate Matt Griffin in good condition.
Alessandro Pier Guidi was the No. 62 Risi driver at the halfway point of the twice-around-the-clock
endurance race before handing off to teammate Toni Vilander at 3:30 a.m. The expected
brake change was performed under his watch before the transition to Davide Rigon.
Rigon then passed the wheel of the No. 62 Ferrari to James Calado after an effective
double stint.
With just under eight hours until the end of the race, Miguel Molina, the No. 82
Ferrari factory GT driver, completed his third stint and handed the car over to
Santiago Creel.
At the 18-hour mark the field was under the fourth caution of the race. Calado was
still driving the No. 62 Ferrari entry and had received a wave-by, gaining a lap.
After pitting for a driver change and fuel, Alessandro Pier Guidi took the wheel
and the team had moved into sixth position in the always challenging GTLM class.
Ricardo Perez de Lara was continuing to pace onward for the No. 82 Risi GTD team,
maintaining 20th in class.
QUOTES:
Martin Fuentes, driver No. 82 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTD:
"It was a pretty good session and the car feels good. I had an incident with a Prototype
coming into turn one, which I think unbalanced the front a little bit, but other
than that the car is good."
Toni Vilander, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM:
"We are seven laps from the class leader so we're just trying to move forward in
the race, managing traffic and managing cars in our class. The car is running well.
Unfortunately, we had some technical issues earlier in the race which cost us many
laps and changed the brakes, which is a normal procedure. It seems like this year
there aren't that many cautions and normally we'd like to do that under yellow,
but this time we couldn't do it. I think there are one or two stints left for me,
so I'll get some rest, then back in the car."
Matt Griffin, driver No. 82 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTD:
"My stint was an entertaining one. We had a brake issue early in the stint where
I lost the brakes, so we had to make a stop to change the brake pads a little earlier
than we planned. I think they just reached the end of their life very quickly, so
that was interesting. Then for the rest of that stint it went well. We've got a
really, really fast race car it's just unfortunate we had the issue with the fire
early on, and two, that we haven't had more cautions to try and get our laps back.
It's going to be very much a case of 'what if' when the race is finished because
I think we have the car to win the race, but obviously we're not in a position
any longer. We're just trekking along and trying to do the best we can."
Davide Rigon, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM:
"The start of the stint was not easy. I was not happy about the set of tires. Then
luckily, we had a full course yellow, which I think we gained a little bit in that
moment and when I changed the tires we were fine. I think I was fast and fastest
on the track except for the Ford. We've lost a lot of time and it's difficult to
gain and there are not enough full course caution yellows. We need to stay focused
and keep pushing like this. The car is good, let's just see if something happens
that can help us."
James Calado, driver No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTLM:
"It was a difficult stint again. We were struggling a lot with grip level. We fixed
the engine issues, which is positive, and we gained a lap back which is positive.
So far, so good. No damage to the car so we'll see what we can do. Obviously it's
going to be difficult to get a podium, but let's try and do the best we can."
