GUNTHER WERKS CREATES A GROUNDBREAKING AIR COOLED 911
Orange County, Calif. (October 18, 2017) - Gunther Werks<http://guntherwerks.com/>, a company dedicated to remastering the iconic Porsche(r) 993, today revealed the power figures for its 993 400R project after months of extensive testing. To enhance the renowned Porsche 993, Gunther Werks has partnered with Rothsport Racing, the acclaimed Oregon based engine builder with more than 30 years of Porsche building and racing experience, to create a 431 horsepower naturally aspirated 4.0 liter power plant for the 2,700-pound 400R project.
At 352 horsepower per ton, the 400R project achieves a more attractive power-to-weight-ratio than the current generation GT3 RS. To reach these power levels and reduce the weight of the vehicle almost every component of the car was upgraded or redesigned. The engine itself runs individual throttle bodies controlled by a bespoke Motec 600 ECU for precise engine management. The 400R will include driver controlled engine mapping including a race mode which will allow the owner to unleash all 431 horsepower and 320 pound feet of torque with an astonishing 7,800rpm redline.
Gunther Werks has worked tirelessly to retain the qualities of the original Porsche 993 that enthusiasts hold in high regard. The sound of the naturally aspirated air-cooled motor was one of these qualities. The team used a larger fan housing from the 993 Turbo to increase cooling; however to retain the iconic engine noise custom curved fan blades were incorporated. This is just one example of many that demonstrates Gunther Werks' commitment to enthusiasts.
"The Porsche 993 is an iconic vehicle within the storied history of Porsche. It's the last air-cooled example of the 911 and a car that many car enthusiasts, not just Porsche enthusiasts, consider to be the pinnacle of the 911" said Amjad Ali, Technical Director at Gunther Werks. "We remained committed to incorporating modern technology into the 993 without destroying the qualities that we as enthusiasts cherished in the original platform."
Not only has the engine of the 400R project been extensively modified, but the rest of the car has also been crafted to put the power to down effectively and handle properly. With the custom molded carbon fiber wide body the track width has been increased to 63 inches front and rear for a square set up inspired by Porsche's iconic racing cars. The 400R's track width is wider than any 911 ever to roll out of Stuttgart.
Custom valved KW clubsport coilovers and a number of other bespoke suspension components keep the car flat while cornering without sacrificing a comfortable ride on the street. Each 400R leaves the Gunther Werks facility corner balanced and aligned to each customer's specification. Another way the 400R sought to maintain the qualities of the original 993 involves preserving the hydraulic steering system. In order to reduce weight, enhance weight balance and keep the pump from sapping engine power the team moved the hydraulic steering pump to the front of the car. To do this they created their own electric motor to power the original hydraulic system, in doing so keeping the highly regarded steering feel intact.
Only 25 examples of the Gunther Werks 993 400R project will be produced, with the first customer deliveries expected in early 2018.
