Cadillac Finds Canada's Next Daring Moment with Vancouver-based Business

Vancouver-based Meatme awarded bursary and mentorship

TORONTO, Aug. 29, 2017 /CNW/ - In honour of Canada's 150th birthday, Cadillac Canada celebrated 150 Daring Moments in Canadian history, and showcased four of those milestone moments through Canadian artistic creations. Each installation was inspired by one of the country's Daring Moments that drove the world forward, and pays tribute to the story behind it.

Following the art installation reveals, entrepreneurs at innovation hubs and entrepreneurial communities were invited to submit Canada's next daring idea, which was reviewed by a panel of leaders across various cultural disciplines. Entrepreneur Michele Romanow, chef Nick Liu, architect Alex Josephson, technology entrepreneur Bryan Mahoney, and jewellery designer Jenny Bird reviewed entries from across Canada in their respective disciplines and led a series of interviews to find moment 151.

The winning idea was Victor Straatman and Vancouver-based Meatme, a way to connect urban residents directly to rural farmers selling meat, to help bring people closer to their local food sources and providers.  Meatme received a $25,000 grant to expand the business across Canada, as well as a mentorship with notable chef Nick Liu.

"It's one of those feel-good pitches. The thing I love about it is that he's supporting local farmers, which for me, is a very important industry. It's something that is dying," said chef Nick Liu.

"We're lucky to live in a country rich in daring history and wanted to mine the past for inspirational moments while looking for Canadians creating their own daring moments today," said Hossein Hassani, managing director, Cadillac Canada. "Cadillac will continue to inspire and help find the next generation of Canadians daring to drive the world forward."

150 Daring Moments

Montreal street artist Fluke created a mural in the city's downtown core paying tribute to a historic first: baseball player Jackie Robinson's legacy. The mural was unveiled during Mural Festival at the corner of St-Laurent and Napoléon.

Toronto-based Castor Design lit up Union Station with an Instagram-worthy installation inspired by Canadian inventors Henry Woodward and Matthew Evans. The installation appeared in the York Street Promenade at Union Station in late June.

Sculptor José Luis Torres created an interpretation of the precision behind clockwork and time itself with an installation honouring Sir Sandford Fleming, who proposed worldwide standard time zones in 1879.

Legendary Vancouver chef Hidekazu Tojo added rice to the outside of the sushi roll, and he inspired what has become known as the California Roll worldwide. Cadillac held a surprise event for diners at Tojo's Restaurant in Vancouver featuring a custom Cadillac roll at the end of June.
