Coalition of Maritime Commerce Organizations Responds to Forensic Report on Asian Carp

CHICAGO, Aug. 18, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, August 18, UnLock Our Jobs--a coalition of business and industry organizations dedicated to supporting the U.S. economy through the advancement of environmentally friendly domestic maritime commerce--responded to Southern Illinois University's issuance of its forensic report on the origins of the Asian carp found in the Little Calumet River in Illinois on June 22. The report indicates that the silver carp caught by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in the Little Calumet River was a four-year-old male that had spent most of its life in the Mississippi River Basin.

Lynn Muench, coordinator of UnLock Our Jobs and Senior Vice President for Regional Advocacy with the American Waterways Operators, a coalition member, stated:

"The fact that the university forensics report indicates the four-year-old male had spent most of its time in the Mississippi River Basin is concerning. However, we are relieved that an intensive commercial harvesting effort over two weeks has not yielded any other Asian carp. This shows that the strategic measures and public and private sector collaboration led by the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee are working, and that the lone silver carp appears to be an anomaly.

UOJ applauds the ACRCC's ongoing vigilance, and we are committed to continued partnership with the ACRCC to implement non-structural measures and secure necessary resources to ensure that Asian carp do not reach the Great Lakes."
