IRVING, Texas (Aug. 9, 2017) - The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College
Hall of Fame announced today that 100 previous nominees for The William V. Campbell
Trophy®, presented by Fidelity Investments, will attend the inaugural Campbell Trophy
Summit in Silicon Valley from Aug. 24-26. The event, sponsored by Intuit Inc. and
taking place at Stanford University, will provide the attendees a unique opportunity
to learn from some of the nation's top entrepreneurs and Silicon Valley CEOs about
the leadership lessons that have driven the success of their businesses.
"In 2009, we decided to pay tribute to Bill Campbell by renaming our top scholar-athlete
award in his honor because of what he represented as a former player and coach who
took the lifelong lessons of the gridiron to help build several of our nation's
most iconic companies, including Apple, Google and Intuit," said NFF Chairman Archie
Manning. "Bill sadly passed away in April of 2016, and the outpouring to do something
to perpetuate his mentoring legacy has been incredible, resulting in the Campbell
Trophy Summit. I specifically want to thank Brad Smith of Intuit and Mark Flynn
of GSV Asset Management for their leadership in making this happen."
The event will cover a wide range of topics designed to foster leadership, personal
growth and the career development of the 100 attendees, who came from the pool of
nominees during the past decade for The William V. Campbell Trophy®. Themes currently
slated for discussion include entrepreneurship, finance, venture capital, health
care, ethics, sports management, women in leadership, mentorship and the lifelong
lessons of the gridiron and how they apply in the business world. Attendees will
also tour the campuses of Intuit, Facebook and Google while hearing from top executives
at each of the companies.
"Bill Campbell had a profound impact at Intuit for more than two decades," said
Brad Smith, Chairman and CEO of Intuit, Inc. "His background as a football coach
gave him a unique perspective on business, and he mentored countless executives,
earning him the nickname the 'Coach of Silicon Valley.' The Campbell Trophy Summit
is centered on a deep commitment to empower the next generation. Bill's legacy will
continue to make an impact on the world, and Intuit is proud to be part of that."
The organizers have assembled an impressive set of distinguished entrepreneurs,
CEOs and friends who benefited from Bill Campbell's guidance, and the speakers currently
slated to attend include more than 15 CEOs, multiple partners in major investment
firms, three members of the NFF Board (Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, Lott Auto
Ventures CEO Ronnie Lott, and Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott); four William V.
Campbell Trophy® recipients (Thomas Burns - 1993 Virginia, Jim Hansen - 1992 Colorado,
David Helton - 2014 Duke and Chris Howard - 1990 Air Force) and two members of the
College Football Hall of Fame (Ronnie Lott - Southern California and Steve Young
 - Brigham Young).
"Bill Campbell influenced and inspired a generation of leaders that seek to share
their perspectives with the next generation," said Mark Flynn, co-managing partner
at GSV Asset Management. "The Summit embraces many of Bill's values and beliefs,
empowering these young men on their journey to make a positive difference in our
world."
The captain of Columbia's 1961 Ivy League championship team, Campbell found his
true calling after an unlikely career change at age 39 from football coach to advertising
executive. His ability to recruit, develop and manage talented executives - all
lessons learned on the gridiron - proved to be a critical component of his ability
to inspire his business teams to the highest levels of success. The CEOs that Campbell
would go on to mentor included Steve Jobs of Apple, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt
of Google, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Scott Cook and Brad Smith of Intuit and countless
others. In his spare time, he coached 8th grade boys and girls flag football.
Campbell joined the NFF Board in 1978 while he was still a coach at Columbia, and
he continued to serve with distinction until his passing last year. In 2004, the
NFF recognized Campbell's contributions and accomplishments by presenting him with
the NFF Gold Medal, the organization's highest honor. In 2009, the NFF renamed college
football's premiere scholar-athlete award as The William V. Campbell Trophy® in
his honor.
One of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, the trophy identifies
one individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success,
football performance and exemplary community leadership. Made of 25-pounds of bronze
and 24-inches in height, the trophy is currently presented by Fidelity Investments,
displayed at its official home inside the New York Athletic Club and endowed by
HealthSouth Corp. with a $25,000 annual scholarship.
The centerpiece to the NFF National Scholar-Athlete program, the trophy was first
presented in 1990, and the award builds on the program, which was launched in 1959
as the first initiative in history to award postgraduate scholarships based on a
player's combined academic, athletic and community accomplishments. The program
has awarded $11.1 million to 828 top athletes since its inception, and it currently
distributes more than $300,000 each year.
