(L-R): Cameron Cassels and Trent HIndman celebrate their victory
podium finish at Watkins Glen in 2016
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y., June 26 - Bodymotion Racing heads to its home track, Watkins
Glen International, this week as the point leaders in the Grand Sport (GS) class
of the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Series. The Ocean Township, N.J.-based
team won this event last year in the GS class and its Street Tuner (ST) car had
its best finish of the season when it finished second. Hopes are high for another
successful weekend at the historic track in the Finger Lakes Region of New York
when the series stages a two-hour race there on Saturday afternoon, July 1.
All four of the team's drivers - Trent Hindman of Wayside, N.J.; Cameron Cassels
of Coldstream, British Columbia; Devin Jones of Mooresville, N.C., and Drake Kemper
of Thermal, Calif. - are quick to sing the praises of the 3.4-mile, 11-turn road
course.
"Watkins is the pinnacle of the type of racetrack we commonly see here in North
America. Fast, flowing, and just a phenomenal stretch of road that follows the natural
terrain of the land it sits on. There is absolutely no feeling in the world that
compares to the run up the esses. Amazing!" is how Hindman puts it. He and Cassels
drive the team's GS car, a Porsche Cayman GT4, No. 12, that is sponsored by Bodymotion,
Delaware Investments and Trim Tex. Hindman set the fastest lap of the race at the
Glen last year, establishing a new track record to boot.
Jones and Kemper drive the team's No. 31 Porsche Cayman in the ST class.
"My longtime sponsor, VeriStor, will debut a new logo for this race at Watkins Glen,"
Jones said. "I'm excited to show it off in front of the huge crowd that always comes
to the Glen for the events this week." The car also carries the colors of Bodymotion,
the Apex Sports Car Academy and Delaware Investments.
The two-hour CTSCC race is slated to begin at 2:25 p.m. on Saturday after the open
grid fan walk at 1:20 p.m. Preliminary action begins with practice at 2:55 p.m.
Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday. ST qualifying is at 1:35 p.m. Friday, with GS qualifying
15 minutes later. Live video streaming and timing and scoring will be available
on imsa.com and imsa.tv. The TV broadcast will be on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday, July
9 from 10 a.m. to noon. All times are Eastern.
Post-race quotes follow:
Trent Hindman, co-driver, No. 12 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman GT4:
This is Bodymotion's home race. Do you expect to have a lot of family and friends
on hand?
"We absolutely do. Last year, the Bodymotion Racing team had many close friends
and guests come up for race day, and there's always a bit of added pressure to put
on a good show for them. Fortunately in 2016 we did! As long as we execute as perfect
of a race as we possibly can, that same result from 2016 will carry over into this
year's effort."
How much confidence does it give you going into this race as the point leaders?
"Much has changed within the last year of the CTSCC so this is a totally clean sheet
for everybody. For sure it gives us confidence moving forward, but this is yet another
race weekend where Cameron Cassels, the Bodymotion Racing team, and myself need
to execute a perfect race in order to achieve victory for the second year in a row."
Is there anything that competitors and fans don't realize or don't take into account
fully about racing at Watkins Glen?
"I believe a common overlooked aspect of racing at the Glen is the sheer pace of
the circuit in general. Obviously everywhere we go with the IMSA Continental Tire
Sports Car Challenge we are racing at quite high speeds, but really nothing compares
to the speed in which things happen around WGI. Thinking far ahead of where you
are currently placed on track is incredibly important in not only setting fast laps,
but also for working through heavy traffic."
What are your thoughts on racing at such a historical circuit like Watkins Glen?
How does it feel to walk in the shoes of some of the sport's most famous drivers?
"There are many, many reasons that contribute to my statements about Watkins Glen
being one of the best tracks in the world, and certainly one of those reasons is
simply the historical aspect of the place. The list of names that have wheeled
their machines to victory on that hallowed piece of ground goes on and on, and I
just hope to be included on that list of names at some point in my career."
Cameron Cassels, co-driver, No. 12 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman GT4:
Now that you've been to all the tracks, where does Watkins Glen stand on your list?
"Watkins Glen remains one of my favorite tracks. It's a high-speed track that really
flows well."
How much confidence does it give you knowing that you and Trent are the GS point
leaders?
"To be honest, I am focusing more on how we can all continuously improve throughout
this season. Saying that, however, it is definitely a great place to be sitting
as we get ready for the Glen. Everybody at Bodymotion has worked hard to get us
here, so I'd love to see us keep this momentum going."
Do you have a particular part of the course that you like the best?
"The entire track is incredible to drive. Picking a favorite section is really tough,
but if I had to pick I would say the 'Boot'."
Are you aware of the rich history of racing at the Glen, or is this something that
you're just learning?
"I am a bit of a history buff, so I am always excited to race on some of the iconic
tracks like Watkins Glen. To be able to race on a track that has hosted so many
premier series such as F1, Can-Am, Trans Am, NASCAR and Indy is pretty cool!"
Has the team done any testing lately?
"Yes, indirectly. I am also competing in the Pirelli World Challenge series this
year. Although the cars are slightly different, it has provided some valuable experience
already this season."
Many Canadians come to this race and of course the next race at Canadian Tire Motorsport
Park. As one of the Canadian drivers in this series, can you speak about the interest
in the series by Canadians?
"With all of the new GT4 machinery this year, and the announcement of even more
manufacturers, it has created a lot more excitement around the Continental Tire
SportsCar Challenge series. Unfortunately television coverage for the races remains
a challenge in Canada for enthusiasts that are not near these events."
Devin Jones, co-driver, No. 31 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman:
Last year's race at Watkins Glen was your car's best finish (second). What will
it take to duplicate that accomplishment, or even exceed it?
"We were very strong last year at Watkins Glen; the car had speed and we executed
everything as a team nearly perfectly. Everyone at Bodymotion Racing has been hard
at work to repair the car after the bad fire at COTA. Our mindset going into Watkins
Glen this year is a little different than 2016 because of the fact that we're out
of the points hunt. We are here to just go after wins for the rest of 2017, so we
can be a little more aggressive on the track and with strategy."
Is there anything that competitors and fans don't realize or don't take into account
fully about racing at Watkins Glen?
"Watkins Glen is fast and has an insane amount of grip after the repave. It's one
of those tracks where the best drivers really show. You have to be on your game
right from the first practice. Car placement and rolling speed through the long
corners are some of the keys to being fast in my mind."
Where does The Glen stand on your list of tracks?
"Right from the moment I drove here for the first time last year, Watkins Glen went
to the top of the list as one of my favorite tracks. It's so fast and flowing with
zero room for error. It's pretty simply a badass place to race."
Is there any attraction, restaurant or hotel in the area that you're looking forward
to re-visiting?
"The Finger Lakes area is pretty stunning and the state parks around Watkins Glen
are a must see when I'm down here in the summer for events."
What are your thoughts on racing at such a historical circuit like Watkins Glen?
How does it feel to walk in the shoes of some of the sport's most famous drivers?
"Watkins Glen has so many stories of great drivers and performances. I grew up watching
races at The Glen and it's amazing to be able to race here now at a professional
level."
Drake Kemper, co-driver, No. 31 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman:
Last year's race at Watkins Glen was your car's best finish (second). What will
it take to duplicate that accomplishment, or even exceed it?
"Last year in MX-5 Cup it was my first time to the famed Watkins Glen, and while
a tad intimidating, I knew I would like it. I certainly wasn't wrong. I left the
weekend with two podiums, so I couldn't complain. It should be interesting to drive
the Porsche here, but I'm excited to show everyone what Devin and I have in store."
Is there anything that competitors and fans don't realize or don't take into account
fully about racing at Watkins Glen?
"Everyone is familiar with Turn 1, the esses, and the 'bus stop'. But people don't
realize that there are another five passing opportunities on the back half of the
track. Expect a lot of position changes throughout the two-hour race."
How many times have you raced at the Glen in the past? Where does it stand on your
list of tracks?
"Last year in the MX5 Cup was my first and only time there. I absolutely loved it,
instant classic, top-five tracks for sure."
Is there any attraction, restaurant or hotel in the area that you're looking forward
to re-visiting?
"Last year I didn't get the opportunity to visit the heralded Seneca Lodge, so I
will definitely make that a priority this time."
What else would fans like to know about you, your car, or this race?
"Personally, after the mechanical failure and fire at COTA (I didn't even get to
sit in the car that weekend), I realized that I couldn't change that fact. I couldn't
fix the car from Los Angeles, etc. So I focused on myself and that alone. While
I haven't had any seat time racing, I have been very fortunate to train with the
best professional athletes in the world at Unbreakable Performance, two hours a
day, six days a week. It's really making a huge difference. I'm down 16 pounds
and 4 percent body fat already.
"I have to give a huge thank you to the Bodymotion crew for working tirelessly on
this car. I really hope we get the opportunity to give them the win(s) they deserve.
We just need a touch of luck mechanically."
What are your thoughts on racing at such a historical circuit like Watkins Glen?
How does it feel to walk in the shoes of some of the sport's most famous drivers?
"Road America has its 'kink,' Montreal GP has the 'wall of champions,' and Watkins
Glen has walls...lots and lots of walls. It's so cool to be on an old-school, true
topography racetrack. It's basically like a street circuit but much, much smoother
and with a lot of elevation changes. It's a true test, every lap."
